Ike Avery Ike Avery (J.D., UNC-Chapel Hill)
IIke served as the supervising attorney for the Crime Control Section of the N.C. Attorney General's Office which provides legal advice and civil defense to the N.C. State Highway Patrol and two other law enforcement agencies for over 28 years. He has defended police officers in scores of civil actions in both state and federal trial and appellate courts. He has lectured throughout the country and instructed thousands of officers on use of force, civil liability and police management. He is author of Legal Aspects of Police Supervision and co-author of Legal Aspects of Police Supervision, Resource Book.

Jim serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Public Administration. He has taught the introduction to public administration course in AOMP since 2000. His recent research has appeared in a variety of scholarly outlets inclmuding: Public Administration Review, International Journal of Public Administration, Review of Public Personnel Administration, Journal of Public Affairs Education, State and Local Government Review, Justice System Journal, Western Criminology Review and Public Personnel Management. He is the author of Drug Testing in Law Enforcement Agencies: Social Control in the Public Sector (LFB Scholarly Publishing).

Charlie is an Associate Director of the AOMP. He was a budget officer with he city of Grand Rapids, MI and for eight years was a public service associate of the Institute of Government, University of Georgia, where he consulted with local governments and state agencies. Professor Coe is the author of Public Financial Management, more than 15 handbooks for management of state and local government, and numerous articles on public administration.

Jim spent 21 years as director of the Institute for Continuing Justice Education at Pennsylvania State University, designed and directed the Police Executive Development (POLEX) Program, which was highly commended in studies sponsored by the IACP and LEAA and has graduated nearly 2,500 police managers. He works with numerous law enforcement agencies as a trainer with agency heads in the use of organizational assessment tools to change the organizational culture, and with municipal, county, and state governments in choosing agency heads.

Steve has served as assistant city manager, Southern Pines, NC and has extensive experience in consultation and training with state and local governments at the Institute of Government, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He has worked with police departments in selection and promotion procedures, and he is the author of a number of publications on public personnel management.

Deborah is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science & Public Administration. She conducts research on a wide-range of issues of concern to police, including residential burglary, graffiti, street drugs, & gangs. She was previously a Senior Research Associate for the Police Executive Research Forum in Washington, D.C.
