Law Enforcement Executive Program
Selection of Participants Eligibility .To qualify for admission to the program, the applicant must be a
sheriff, police chief, or agency head with a state, county, or municipal agency or
hold a command level position (generally, lieutenant or above) in one of the
above-mentioned agencies.
Application. Applicants will be accepted without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability status, or sexual orientation. If you need accommodations to participate in the program, please let us know. We will be glad to assist you. Preference will be given to police chiefs and sheriffs. For the 2008-2009 session, the application is exclusively online (click here) . We are nearing our class size limit, but we will continue taking applications for the waiting list.
Class Size.To keep the program small enough for participants and faculty to
know one another and for participants to take an active role, class size will be
limited to thirty registrants*.
Notification.Applicants will be notified of their selection for the program by
September 5, 2008. Administrative material will be sent to each participant with their acceptance letter.
Participation Requirements .Attendance at all 6 sessions is required.
Prior approval from the program director must be obtained before missing any
sessions. If a participant gains approval for missing a session, he or she will be
expected to complete an assignment related to the missed block of instruction.
A student who misses more than three half-day sessions of the instructional time
will not receive a certificate at graduation. A student could still earn the certificate
by attending the missed sessions in a subsequent year.
Participants as a Resource. The presentation of each topic will be designed to
draw the police executives who enroll in the program into active participation.
They will learn from one another as well as from the faculty. This will require an
uncompromising commitment to preparation and attendance. Every person in
the program will be important to its success.
Methodology .Class work will include discussion, lecturing, skill-building
exercises, use of self-knowledge instruments, and role playing. The relatively
formal classroom relationship between faculty and participants will be balanced
with opportunities to meet and talk informally at meals and other gatherings that
are scheduled as part of each session.
Preparation. In order to make the most of their time together during each
session, both participants and faculty are expected to be well prepared.
Faculty will select reading materials that are informative, challenging, and to the
point. Participants will be expected to use these materials effectively. Further,
they will be expected to conduct research between sessions.
